Competition for experienced strata managers could not be fiercer. It’s an employee’s market, salaries are near 50% of total revenue, and according to our friends at Macquarie Bank, staff turnover rates are higher than ever (Macquarie Strata Benchmarking Report 2023).
Like winning new strata management business, to win new strata management talent you must stand out from the pack. Flexible work arrangements, bring your dog to work, and getting fed at the office are just some of the tactics being used to attract the best and the brightest in all sorts of fields around the world. But how do you get to these people to display your true corporate personality and culture?
There are 16 million professionals and students in Australia, and 15 million of them are on LinkedIn. (Forbes Australia, 2024). This might be a good place to start.
LinkedIn is Facebook for business, and it’s well-used by strata people. It’s useful for keeping up with fast breaking business news, learning from your heroes, and keeping your eye on your competitors. But it’s most useful for displaying who you are and what you are about, which counts when your prospective talent is stalking you (which perversely you can monitor when you upgrade to the premium service).

‘Buzzwords are adjectives that are used so often in LinkedIn headlines and summaries that they become almost completely meaningless. Our regular rankings of the most over-used buzzwords include terms like ‘specialised’, ‘leadership’, ‘focused’, ‘strategic’, ‘experienced’, ‘passionate’, ‘expert’, ‘creative’, ‘innovative’ and ‘certified’. Now I’m not saying you can’t describe yourself as these things – or that they don’t matter. However, just using these words won’t convince people that you have these qualities. You need to demonstrate them as well – both in the way you describe yourself, and in the way you use LinkedIn profile features to show what you’re about’.
